Genomic research lets scientists find antimicrobial compounds, but identifying their action is difficult. We use phage-induced morphological alterations to search for antimicrobial phage genomes. Vibriophage KVP40 produces morphological alterations in Vibrio parahaemolyticus comparable to mecillinam, a cell wall synthesis inhibitor. The phage genome showed that lytic transglycosylase (LT) is promising for future study. Wildtype KVP40-LT generated morphological alterations in bacteria comparable to phage or mecillinam. These domains are essential for antibacterial action, since its mutants exhibited no impact. Phage-induced morphological alterations lead the identification of phage-derived antimicrobials.Hydrogels are promising materials for soil amendment and moisture conservation. There are various hydrophilic polymers that can be used to prepare hydrogel, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, poly(acrylic acid). However, the use of petroleum-based polymer in agricultural application can cause environmental problems as the polymer trend to slowly degrade over the time causing the microplastic residue. Among these polymers, starch is biocompatible, biodegradable, and widely available, so it is an alternative polymer to produce biodegradable hydrogel. In order to control water release from hydrogel structure at the elevated temperature, the hydrogel needs to be modified with thermo-responsive polymer. Here, we propose the concept of starch-based hydrogel grafted with thermo-responsive polymer so that the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) leads to polymer chain collapsing to cover hydrogel matrices preventing water released. The present work demonstrates the molecular design and synthesis of starch-based hydrogel grafted with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and its thermo-responsive behavior. The use of granite industry waste as a mixing material of concrete reduces not only natural aggregate consumption but also solid waste disposal problems. This project studied the influences of recycled granite aggregate on concrete properties. Both the low- (20 MPa) and high- (50 MPa) strength concretes were investigated for various sand replacing proportions with granite particles (namely up to 50 % by weight). The tests showed the concrete compressive strength was not affected by the inclusion of granite wastes as compared to conventional concrete. The results on the other hand revealed the reduction of concrete tensile strength with the 50 % proportion of granite wastes, where the effects were more pronounced in the low-strength concrete. The presence of granite particles also dropped the fresh concrete workability. The microstructure images of the granite waste concrete revealed the weakened interfacial transition zone between cement paste matrix and aggregate.73Rep. Grant. Res., Asahi Glass Foundation (2023)
